Welcome to P2S!
P2S
Welcome to P2. Our teacher is Miss Stevenson and our classroom assistants this year are Mrs Rogers (Monday - Thursday), Mrs Holmes (Friday) and Miss Salters. We have been settling in nicely into another school year. We have made lots of new friends and we are engaging in lots of learning. Take a look at what we have been up to so far this year.
Term 1
This year we went back to our Start of Year Curriculum Talks for the first time since Covid. If you were unable to attend please find the information below.
Our topic this term is 'Healthy me and Fabulous Food'. We have been enjoying lots of play based activities to help build our understanding of the topic. We used fruit themed paper to make our own fruit faces inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo. We used scissors to develop our fine motor and cutting skills and showed off our creative sides with some fantastic creations.
We have also loved playing in our role play hospital and pharmacy. We have got to take on the role of a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, receptionist and patients. We have got great imaginations! We also got a chance to imagine what it would be like to be a dentist using our role play dentist kit. We love pretending to give fillings and also brushing the dirt (whiteboard pen) from the dirty teeth.
We have been developing our maths skills by sorting fruit and vegetables by size
and by using the sorting pie to sort out the fruit in a number of ways including
colour, number and type of fruit. To challenge ourselves more we have been
using tweezers to help pick up the fruit, this helps develop our fine motor skills.
We also worked on our writing skills by making and writing 'Get Well Soon' cards
at the writing table. We used plasters to make a fun picture on the front.
We learned all about germs and looked at how quickly they can spread by carrying out an experiment with bread. We had 4 pieces of bread and passed them around everyone in the class. The first piece of bread was passed around with our hands as they were when we returned from lunch. Then we passed around a second piece of bread but this time we had rubbed our hands on the face and the carpet before hand, Miss Stevenson even coughed on it afterwards for extra impact. The third piece of bread was passed around after we had all cleaned our hands with antibacterial hand get. The final piece of bread was not touched at all and was just kept in a control bag. Over 3 weeks we monitored the bread and could not believe how far the germs spread on our 'dirty hands' piece of bread. Take a look for yourself at the results.
We also used red cabbage water to make our own base indicator. We added lemon juice, baking soda, vinegar, milk and hand soap to the cabbage water and watched to see how it changed it's colour. We had so much fun but we weren't to keen on the smell!
In our maths we have been looking at numbers within 10 and investigating how they are made up as well as adding them together. We have also been sorting our own sets using a Venn Diagram.
